Water strategy agreement signed

Electricity and Water Affairs Minister Dr. Abdulhussaiun Mirza has signed an agreement with the Arabian Gulf University (AGU) in preparation of Bahrain’s National Water Strategy from now until 2030 as part of the directives of Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, the Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Board of Water Resources.
The agreement was signed on behalf of the AGU by its President Dr. Khalid bin Abdul Rahman al Owhali. It puts in place common strategic objectives and core policies and programmes required to create an integrated system for the management of sustainable water resources that contribute to the economic and social development of Bahrain.
The minister said Bahrain is facing many challenges in trying to provide water for various development sectors in light of the scarcity of natural resources, population growth and rising costs of non-traditional use and the exchequer bears the financial, economic and environmental costs. He said there is also growing requirement for residential and industrial purposes and for that more desalination facilities are required.
He said that is why a Sustainable Energy Unit has been created and this will raise energy efficiency and use of renewable energies in all sectors. The minister praised the wise leadership and Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa for their unwavering support to face the growing challenges in the light of the growth of population and the resulting water scarcity.  He said availability of water resources are adversely affected by climate change with global climate models indicating an increase in water scarcity in the region in general.
The AGU President welcomed cooperation with the government and said the AGU would contribute in the preparation of the strategy for Bahrain. He said there was a need for reforms in the GCC states in the area and they have to ensure these reforms are based on the application of demand and management.
The ceremony was attended by Ms. Roula Majdalani, Director of the Department of Sustainable Development Policies for Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, among others.
